Strengthening the Dementia Public Health Infrastructure
Alzheimer’s and other dementia are a growing public health issue. Recognizing that there are successful public health interventions, Congress took bold action in 2018 passing the bipartisan Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act (P.L.115-406). Thanks to this important law, public health departments across the nation have the resources to improve brain health across the life course. With this important law set to expire in 2024, AIM is calling on Congress to ensure this progress continues.
BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Reauthorization Act
The bipartisan BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Reauthorization Act (S. 3775 / H.R. 7218) will continue strengthening the Alzheimer’s and other dementia public health infrastructure in communities across the nation. This critical legislation will empower public health departments to implement effective dementia interventions such as efforts to increase early detection and diagnosis, risk reduction, and caregiver support.
The original BOLD Act has been essential to creating and growing a public health infrastructure for dementia across the country. Through the law, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided funding to state, local and tribal public health departments to help them improve brain health in their communities. But more work remains.
