WASHINGTON, D.C., October 29, 2016 - In appreciation and acknowledgement of Senator Roy Blunt's (R-MO) continued leadership in the fight to end Alzheimer's, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) is supporting his re-election campaign. AIM is supporting his re-election through a series of online advertisements which acknowledge his successful efforts to secure increased medical research funding for Alzheimer's and other diseases, and his work to improve access to critical care and support services for those living with Alzheimer's and their caregivers.
"Senator Blunt has been a true leader, securing historic, urgently-needed funding in the fight to end Alzheimer's disease," said Robert Egge, Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Impact Movement. "His leadership in his role as Chairman of the Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations Committee has ensured critical research to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's by 2025 will advance."
Alzheimer's disease is the only leading cause of death in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. Today, the total national cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's and other dementias is estimated at $236 billion (excluding unpaid caregiving), of which $160 billion is the cost to Medicare and Medicaid. Under his bipartisan leadership, together with Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA), research funding for Alzheimer's disease received a historic $350 million increase for FY16, with an additional $400 million increase pending for the FY17 budget.
Senator Blunt has also been a champion for those living with the disease and their caregivers through his support of the Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act. He was also instrumental in the Act's inclusion in the Senate Appropriations Committee FY17 funding bill.
Thanks to his leadership we are another step closer to a world without Alzheimer's.
